Introduction to SharePoint
What is SharePoint
SharePoint is a Microsoft web application tool which can be used for accessing, sharing, collaborating, reporting, storing, securing and almost everything with the piece of information in the form of list or document. Whatever user works with is list or library.
A list is a place where the user stores data just like excel.
A library is a kind of list where user upload documents in the form of docs, PDF, ppt etc. it integrates seamlessly with office products like Word, PowerPoint,Visio etc.
SharePoint can be considered as a platform where the user can define his requirements and implement it using different features. It can be anything company intranet site, e-commerce site or simply use it for storing data.
Microsoft released their first product named as SharePoint Portal Server 2001 (SPS) in 2001. Microsoft started working on improving the scalability and site features. In the year 2002, they came up with a successive version named as Microsoft SharePoint Team Services 2002 (STS). In October 2003, Microsoft released a new version called Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) and it was a part of Windows Server 2003. It came up with the features like web part, indexing/search , user interface using ASP.NET. In the year 2004, Content Management System and SPS joined together. Windows Workflow foundation came and shared the common platform with SPS to start workflow service . In 2006, SharePoint 2007 (MOSS) was released with new features like Business Data Catalog and Info-path form services. In 2010, SharePoint 2010 (MSS) got launched and there were huge improvements in every department of workflows, excel services, business data services, Info-path etc. In October 2012, SharePoint On Premise was released by them and SharePoint On-line came at the end of Feb 2013. SharePoint 2016 will be launched in first half of 2016.
